What I offer

Weight Neutral Approach

Health That Goes Beyond the Scale

When you think of working with a dietitian, you might assume the focus will be on meal plans and weight loss strategies. I offer a different approach, one that prioritises your overall health and wellbeing without making weight the centrepiece of your care.

What is a weight-neutral approach?

A weight-neutral or weight-inclusive approach shifts focus away from weight and BMI as the primary indicators of health. Instead, it embraces a more holistic view that considers the full picture of your wellbeing and addresses the underlying causes of health concerns.

This paradigm recognises an important truth: health improvements can occur independently of weight loss through meaningful behavioural changes. Research demonstrates that a larger body size or a higher BMI does not necessarily indicate poor health. By moving beyond weight as the sole measure of success, we can explore a broader range of health-promoting options tailored to your unique needs.

This approach actively addresses and challenges weight stigma, making healthcare more accessible and removing barriers that prevent many people from seeking the support they deserve.

Jessica’s Dietetics philosophy

Weight stigma can have a profound impact on individuals, and weight loss diets are not inherently health-promoting. This knowledge shapes my commitment to providing nutrition therapy that focuses on sustainable, health-enhancing behaviours while helping you build a positive relationship with food and your body.

While weight isn’t the focus of treatment, that doesn’t mean we avoid conversations about body shape and size. I respect your desire to lose weight, and we can discuss these topics with honesty and compassion. A commitment to body respect also allows you to access healthcare without fear of shame around your weight or dietary patterns.

What we focus on instead

When weight control is de-centred, space opens up to work on what truly matters:

Improving your overall dietary patterns and nutrition
Reducing disordered eating behaviours
Enhancing your relationship with movement and exercise
Supporting your psychological and social wellbeing
Developing a more positive body image
Building effective stress management skills

These behavioural changes not only improve health in sustainable ways but also honour your body exactly as it is now.

Is this approach right for you?

The weight-neutral approach may be particularly beneficial if you:

Have or have had an eating disorder
Experience a history of disordered eating patterns
Have tried dieting and found it stressful or unsustainable
Find that focusing on weight loss increases negative body image or poor self-worth
Notice that weight-focused approaches impact your social and psychological wellbeing
Are interested in a more holistic, comprehensive approach to health
